Celebrate Good Times! Come On!

2018 is nearly over! However, there is still one big event left, New Year’s Eve! This exciting evening is full of fun and lots of partying!

Deciding on what to do on New Year’s Eve can cause lots of dilemmas! Do you hit the town? Go to a party? Watch the fireworks? Or stay in and have a cosy night in with your loved ones on the sofa? Here at ScS we’re opting for the latter, and want to see 2019 in with a nice takeaway, a box set and a bottle of bubbly (or two…).

When staying in on NYE there’s nothing better than cosying up on the couch and waiting for the countdown! This magical moment is the highlight of NYE and getting up and trying to recite the lyrics to ‘Auld Lang Syne’ always provides some laughs!

Whatever you get up to this New Year’s Eve, make sure you spend it care free, stress free and with the people who really matter most to you!

Let us know what you get up to tonight, and we wish you all the best for 2019!

New Years Resolutions

Now it’s a new year, it’s time to start all those things we’ve been trying to do the whole of 2018. In reality, we all know these resolutions won’t see February, but we can dream.

The classic resolutions like start going to the gym, start eating healthier and to stop drinking are usually the first to fail at the first hurdle. Other resolutions such as stop eating chocolate, stop smoking and saving money usually start off strong, but again, rarely make it out of the first few weeks.

According to a recent ComRes poll, the most common New Year’s resolutions in the UK include:

  1. Exercise more (38 per cent)
  2. Lose weight (33 per cent)
  3. Eat more healthily (32 per cent)
  4. Take a more active approach to health (15 per cent)
  5. Learn new skill or hobby (15 per cent)
  6. Spend more time on personal wellbeing (12 per cent)
  7. Spend more time with family and friends (12 per cent)
  8. Drink less alcohol (12 per cent)
  9. Stop smoking (9 per cent)
  10. Other (1 per cent)

Exercise based resolutions seem to be the most common new year’s resolutions with everyone trying to get that perfect bod for the summer holiday season only a few months away. However, for this year, I think we should all just agree to wear our wintery dad bods all year round and save ourselves the time and effort of the gruelling workouts we force ourselves to do.

Another common resolution is to drink less alcohol. After a boozy Christmas period and New Year’s Eve, either a dry January or a promise to yourself to drink less is always appealing, and is also a great resolution to save money and get healthier. However, like many other resolutions, once dry January is over and you don’t have the full support of others, this resolution can quickly deteriorate. The parties start coming back around with more and more social gatherings, and a few nice glasses of wine becomes more appealing.

Let us know your new year resolutions and we wish everyone the best of luck for their New Year’s Resolutions.

What’s on the Box this Christmas

With decorations up and festive songs blasting everywhere we go, it is fair to say Christmas 2018 is in full swing. During this wonderful time, there are hundreds of Christmas classics gracing our screens and it can be hard to make sure you watch them all.

That’s why at ScS we have asked our employees what their favourite TV shows and movies are to watch over Christmas. With a lot of dubious choices vetoed (I will forever refuse to accept Die Hard as a Christmas movie), it seems as though throughout ScS our favourite Christmas TV shows and movies vary massively.

The most popular movie, and one of my all-time Christmas favourites, is elf. The joy this wonderful charismatic man brings to our screen is second to none. Will Ferrell is a statement of comedy and this piece of genius will always be Christmas must.

For a Christmas TV series, the Vicar of Dibley Christmas special topped our list. Everyone loves a Christmas dinner, but four may be pushing it! I’m usually struggling to make room for dessert number one! But there’s something brilliant about watching the pain Geraldine goes through forcing the dinners down and perhaps it makes us feel less guilty about our over indulgences throughout the day!

Other Christmas classics making the list include:

Home alone series
Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special
Polar Express
The Holiday
The Royal Family Christmas Special
The Grinch
The Santa Claus
Love Actually
Deck the Halls
Miracle on 34thStreet
Christmas with the Kranks

Although there are already hundreds of Christmas movies and box sets available, every year there are some great new festive tv to keep an eye out for.

The new Christmas movie that is definitely worth a watch is the remake of a lot of people’s festive favourite, the Grinch. With a lot of sceptics out there to as whether it would as good as the original, they’d be right, but I think you’d still be pleasantly surprised with this heart-warming family friendly Christmas movie.

Michael McIntryre’s Big Christmas Show is on BBC one on Christmas Day and with live music and lots of laughs guaranteed, this looks like a show that’s not to be missed. Another show not to be missed is the new adaptation of Watership Down, which brings the very popular novel to life!

Let us know your thoughts on our Christmas lists and let us know your festive favourites in the comments!

Christmas Decoration Trends 2018

It’s nearly time to head up to the dusty attic and bring down those Christmas decorations once again. It seems like only yesterday we were gathered around the Christmas tree on our sofas, handing out presents and spending quality time with our loved ones.

The UK’s proudest parents have been announced!

Our nationwide search for the UK’s proudest parents has come to its conclusion.

We asked you, the nation’s parents, to share with us the moments that filled you with the most pride, and you inundated us with entries!

We are delighted to announce our lucky winner as Amber Goddard, of Plymouth. Up against truly heart-warming competition from the likes of a 5k charity running star and a singing sensation, Amber was chosen as the competition winner after submitting this breath-taking photo of her daughter at just 13 weeks old.

Amber shared her inspiring story with us: “Beatrice is our Rainbow daughter as last year my husband and I lost our son Mylo at 21 weeks. We had struggled to conceive so when we found out in 2017 that we were pregnant again, it was fabulous news!”

“The pregnancy was fraught, I was regularly in and out of hospital and eventually had Beatrice early at 33 weeks pregnant. She went through difficult days in the Special Care unit, she was so tiny but so perfect. She has spurred me on through difficult times and is my biggest accomplishment in life.”

On winning, Amber said:  “Since becoming a mum something within me has truly changed. I have never been happier than I am now and, as the competition suggested, I feel pride every day that I wake up and get to see our gorgeous girl smile. I love sharing our story and our photos of Bea always seem to make people happy so it seemed like a good idea, even just so I could feel proud. I never imagined winning – but that just makes it even better.

“I like to think our story is an interesting one and I always talk about both our children because awareness is really important of both child loss and rainbow babies. Premature babies have such a fighting spirit and it’s so lovely to have lots of happy moments to share. It makes me so happy to think that Bea has spread joy to others too and winning means that we can continue making happy memories as a family.”

Amber and her family will receive a £150 Virgin Experience Voucher, with which we know the family will make even more proud memories. On the competition, our Communications Executive, Vicki Burns, said: “We received some fantastic entries to the competition, it certainly was emotional looking through some incredible moments but Amber’s story touched our hearts. We hope that the voucher will pave the way for the whole family to create some lasting memories, they definitely all deserve it.”

Amber’s story wasn’t the only one to pull on the heartstrings of our head office, other entries that were worthy of winning included:

Manchester’s Danielle Waine, who shared with us this moving image of her daughter completing a 5 kilometre charity race, had this to say in her entry: “My daughter completed a 5k for charity, she’s type 1 diabetic and her blood sugars dropped near the end but she insisted on finishing, so drank her hypo treatment while jogging the last bit. It was a super proud moment, nothing stops my girl.”

In academics, Rebecca Doherty, from Willenhall, submitted this photo of her son proudly graduating from nursery. She said “My little boy graduated last week, he has suffered from delayed speech and he made me so proud when he sang the songs at his graduation.”

Finally, we were moved by this powerful image of Jade Waites and her son, also from Plymouth. She entered this stunning photo from her graduation day, commenting “This is the day I graduated from university after four years of studying. As a single parent with no parents myself, my son was my rock throughout my time at university and I wouldn’t have got through it without him. I couldn’t be prouder of what we have together.”

We’d like to extend our thanks once again to everyone who shared their stories with us, and encourage you to keep an eye on our Facebook page for more competitions in the future!

ScS named ‘Best Flooring Retailer 2018’

We are extremely proud to announce that we have been named Best Flooring Retailer 2018 by leading industry magazine, Interiors Monthly. The award, which recognises excellence within the furniture and interiors sector, saw us beat off some opposition within an extremely competitive sector, and highlights the continued hard work of our flooring teams nationwide.

Best Flooring Retailer 2018’

On the success, Farren Murphy, Head of Flooring at ScS, said: “In recent years we’ve successfully grown our flooring business and our position as a leading retailer and specialist in this area. This award really is the icing on the cake for our hard-working team, from taking customers order right through to delivery and beyond. However, the hard work doesn’t stop here, we have plans already in place to invest in the further growth and development of the team and in the overall shopping experience for our customers.”

At ScS, we pride ourselves in customer service, and we know that purchasing a new carpet is a huge decision for the whole family. To make sure you’re as clued up as possible before buying, we’ve put these useful hints and tips together:

What type of carpet is right for you?

Before you think about what pattern or colour of carpet you’d like, one of your first considerations should be what type of carpet is best suited to your home. Depending on your family or pets, you need to think about durability and resistance to stains, in order to find the most appropriate option for your household. Likewise, when looking at flooring for different room types you must consider specifically designed styles, for rooms such as kitchens, or bathrooms. Investigate the pile height and density before making a decision. It is also important to consider your budget at this point. Make sure you know exactly how much your budget is, to ensure your dream carpet is affordable.

What style are you looking for?

After deciding your carpet type, it’s now time to choose the colour and pattern. The fun part! Flooring offers such a wide range of options to choose from, in terms of style, materials and feel. Farren Murphy believes the perfect way to refresh your home with new flooring is to introduce bright colours and patterns in to a space, creating an ultra-modern look. He says “Stripes, checks and other bold patterns are all fashionable looks in flooring. Team up these designs with natural upholstery and décor for a really modern look. Alternatively, create a contemporary statement by selecting a carpet that features zig-zags, hexagons, circles or other on-trend geometric designs”.

When looking at your carpet style, it is also important to consider how it will match with your existing room. You may have just purchased a new sofa, and need to make sure your new carpet compliments the furniture well, in order to make the ultimate statement in your revamped home.

After choosing the flooring style you want, the next key step is to ensure you measure up your rooms correctly before ordering. Sounds difficult, however it can actually be quite simple. The golden rule is to measure the length and width of your room in metres, then add 10cm to both of these measurements to allow for cutting around doorways and any other fixtures and fittings.

Following our top tips will help make the journey to your new flooring as easy and simple as possible! You can find a complete detailed breakdown of the process along with FAQs in our carpet buying guide.

Essex youngster crowned top designer in My Sofa Is Competition

To celebrate the natural creativity of youngsters, we teamed up with Ashley Manor, a UK award-winning upholstery expert, to launch a nationwide design competition called ‘My Sofa is’.

Gracee Denning, aged 10, has been crowned the top designer, with her school inspired sofa winning first place in a national vote. The Essex youngster entered her design (below) with the caption: “My sofa is… all about my school, it’s bright and will make people happy when they see it. I came up with this sofa because I realised school has lots of equipment and subjects and I’ve put all these into our super school sofa.”

Ashley Manor will work with Gracee to make her sofa a reality and donate it to Gracee’s school, Noak Bridge Primary School in Basildon. Gracee has also been given the trip of a lifetime to Disneyland Paris. On winning the competition, Gracee said:

“I am extremely happy! What came as a surprise for me was not only my sofa being made for my school, but also a trip to Disneyland!! As well as all this, I have the lovely comments that people wrote about me.
