Following research that revealed seven out of ten parents wish they were able to have more family dinnertimes and one in five families admitting only eating together once a week, we challenged families around the UK to bring back family dining and eat together every night for at least a week.

The Crampton family and the Lees family have been in touch to tell us how it went.

There are three children in the Lees household, who, along with their parents, took on the family dining challenge to eat dinner together every day for a week. Mum of the house, Helen, said “We try to eat as a family as much as possible, but it doesn’t always happen. It was really fun to challenge ourselves and make a conscious effort to sit at the table together and enjoy a proper meal every night this week.

“We ended up having conversations we wouldn’t usually have, and enjoyed laughing about the trials and tribulations of our days.

“Our youngest son is six and our oldest daughter is 23, so dinner time is really the only time we all cross paths and can enjoy quality time together. This week we experimented with different meals and encouraged each other to try new dishes, which was really fun.”

Emma Crampton took on the family dining challenge in October with her parents and sistersI have a huge family, and so it’s always a challenge to get us all around the dinner table! This week we managed it every night and sometimes invited friends along too! It has really brought us closer together. We made sure that we cooked something that everyone would like (a challenge in itself!) and really enjoyed the quality time together.

“The dinner table is a place with limited distractions, no TV or phones allowed. So it is a really important time to spend together. Going forward we are going to aim for two family dinners a week and make sure that each member of the family is there, including our much loved dog, Domino!”
