Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday (as it is traditionally known) is a day of feasting prior to to Ash Wednesday, which signifies the beginning of Lent for Christians.
On Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians would go to confession to be absolved of their sins – they were being ‘shriven’ and this is where the name Shrove Tuesday originated from.
