Last month we give you the best box sets to watch this autumn. This month, we’re taking it a step further with the best box sets of all time! Well, the last 15 years anyway…

Picking five series with such stiff competition isn’t easy, but we know that you’ll be hooked as you sprawl out on the sofa and absorb yourself in hours of television gold. Here goes:

Mad Men

Slick, smooth and classy, Mad Men delivered an enthralling show based around advertising in the fifties and sixties, focusing on the sharply dressed Don Draper. With seven series in this classic drama, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got a comfy sofa, because once you start watching, you’ll not be able to take yourself away!

Boardwalk Empire

With Martin Scorsese producing this prohibition era drama, it was never going to be anything other than a classic, was it? Set in Atlantic City, the series focuses on Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson, a leading political figure, whose lavish lifestyle and connections to local gangsters started to attract the attention of the FBI. Initially a bit of a slow burner, Boardwalk Empire quickly gathers pace and will have you so hooked; you won’t want to get off your sofa.

Game of Thrones

Set in fictional continents Westeros and Essos, Games of Thrones has it all. This US fantasy series, which is filmed in Belfast, has been running for seven series and the show’s popularity continues to grow. With a number of plot lines and a large cast, the show will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. If you’re starting at the beginning, stay away from the internet! There are too many spoilers out there – get comfy on your sofa instead!

The Office

Written and created by comedy legends Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office only aired for two seasons, but due to its unrelenting comedy and influence over the next ten years, it makes our list. This mockumentary is set around a fictional paper company in Slough (where life is stationary), with branch manager David Brent regularly trying to impress his staff and colleagues, only to fail with hilarious and disastrous results. With only two series to watch, this is perfect for a long weekend on the sofa!

Breaking Bad

A bit like Marmite – you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it. Breaking Bad captured audiences all over the world when it was aired, becoming the most talked about TV show on the planet and scooping up a number of awards in the process. Bryan Cranston’s transformation from a mild-mannered chemistry teacher to a dangerous, super-criminal is one of the greatest examples of character acting we’ve ever witnessed on TV. We suggest you get comfy on the sofa and give this one a try…

There are many more classic series we could have listed, but we know you’ll not be able to take yourself off the sofa once you start watching the classics! Enjoy!
