Christmas is getting closer, and festive cheer is spreading across the nation. The countdown to the big day is on, and to help you get in the spirit, we’ve selected our top five must watch Christmas films to enjoy on your sofa this year.

1. Elf

This Will Ferrell classic has just been voted the greatest Christmas film of all time by Ranker, and we’re not surprised. Elf arguably portrays Ferrell at his big kid best, and it is ram packed full of family fun, underplayed with plenty of adult humour – perfect for the whole family to enjoy on a cold winter’s night.

2. Home Alone

Was he left at home on purpose? Eagle eyed viewers online recently spotted that Kevin’s plane ticket was actually thrown in the bin before his family left for Paris! Had his parents had enough following his behaviour on the eve of their trip? We’ll leave that for you to decide…. What we do know, is that Home Alone is a true family favourite Christmas film, and a must watch this year!

3. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This big screen adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ beloved Christmas tale became a box office phenomenon in 2001, with Jim Carey stealing the show as the reclusive Grinch. Despite his persistent, perilous attempts to ruin Christmas in Whoville, The Grinch ends up becoming filled with Christmas spirit in this fantastically funny family film – a must watch this Christmas!

4. Miracle On 34th Street

Away from the comedy classics; Miracle On 34th Street is a heart-warming children’s drama that is sure to have them enthralled from start to finish. This remake of the 1947 original, one of the original Christmas classics, draws in a number of big names, including the late Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins and Mara Wilson, and is guaranteed to fill you with festive spirit.

5. Love Actually

Speaking of big names – Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Kiera Knightly, Claudia Schiffer, Colin Firth, Rowan Atkinson – Love Actually pretty much steals the show when it comes to an all-star cast. This Christmas themed comedy drama sees nine intertwined stories examine the complexities of love, and is a barrel of laughs from start to finish. Unlike the others on the list, this Christmas film may be better after the kids have gone to bed!

Now you’ve got the list of Christmas films to watch this year, it’s time to get cosy on the sofa and get into the Christmas spirit with a selection of snacks and a warm fire!
