When it comes to buying flooring, it’s not just an issue of taste or style, but also one of practicality. There are many factors you need to consider before you make your final choice, such as the people in your home and their age, whether you have pets and children and how busy your home is – some types of flooring are better than others for high traffic households as they are manufactured to be more durable. Considering these factors will help to ensure that you make the right choice for you, your family and your home.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is hugely popular and there are many reasons for this, such as how easy it is to install compared to other flooring products and also its durability.

Platinum XL Stone Elite £24.99 per m2

Platinum XL Stone Elite £24.99 per m2

People tend to choose laminate flooring because it is economical and is designed to simulate real-looking wood/stone. Laminate isn’t ideal for pet owners, particularly those who own dogs as the laminate could cause the dog to lose its grip on the floor.

Room suitability: Every room, except where there is excessive moisture, such as the bathroom and kitchen.

Key features:

  • Generally resistant to UV light, making it less likely to lose its colour and fade in the sun
  • Easy to install as the laminate panels simply click together (adhesive is used depending on the type)
  • Can be installed on top of pre-existing flooring, with the exception of carpets
  • Easy to clean – use minimal water on a mop and then vacuum afterwards
  • Versatile, durable and resistant to wear and tear
  • Affordable to buy with very little maintenance required
  • Simulates real-looking wood

Vinyl Flooring

Tiles Style

Tiles Style £20.99 per m2

Vinyl flooring, like laminate, simulates real-looking materials such as stone and wood. It also shares similar popularity to laminate flooring, owing to its low cost, durability and low levels of maintenance. Priced similarly to laminate, this flooring often comes slip retardant, making it a great choice for the elderly or those who are not so steady on their feet. Unlike laminate, vinyl is much more appropriate for pets such as dogs as the material makes way for increased traction. Vinyl also makes it exceptionally easy to clean up pet spills and accidents – all that is needed is a damp mop, (we recommended vacuuming over the top afterwards to remove excess water). Vinyl is also very good to keep clean and as it does not harbour bacteria as much as other types of flooring. If you are still not convinced you may be interested to hear that vinyl is often tough enough to deal with pet claws and it also softens the noise of your pets moving around. In simpler terms, vinyl is ideal for animals.

Room suitability: Traditionally used in bathrooms and kitchens, but can be used in any room.

Key features:

  • Often slip retardant, though you are always advised to check before purchasing
  • One of the easiest types of flooring to lay, making it an option for those who aren’t normally into DIY
  • There are less places for vinyl to harbour bacteria
  • Best for pet owners
  • More appropriate for the elderly
  • Affordable to buy, with minimal maintenance required
  • Still simulates real-looking material

Hardwood

Hardwood flooring is a great way to create a rustic, natural feel to your home. This type of flooring comes with a wide range of finishes such oiled, hand-scraped and brushed.

Hardwood floors are hard-wearing, meaning they can last for decades if they’re cared for correctly, such as not using too much water or applying chemicals to your flooring.  Simply adding rugs and mats to high traffic areas will help to protect your floor from scratches and general wear.

Room suitability: Every room, except where there is excessive moisture, such as the bathroom and kitchen.

Key features:

  • Rustic, natural look
  • Hard-wearing
  • Variety of finishes
  • Easy to clean and maintain

Carpets

Status £18.99 per m2

Carpets are perhaps the most popular type of flooring used and this is down to a number of reasons. Carpets offer more choice when it comes to home interior design as there are thousands of varieties to choose from. They also help to provide warmth and comfort as carpets provide thermal resistance and absorb warm air, helping to maintain the temperature in your rooms. Carpets are also popular with the older generation, or those that a prone to slips, trips and falls as carpets provide added cushioning to minimise any impact with the floor and in addition to this, help to minimise noise through the absorption of sound waves.

Room suitability: Every room, except where there is excessive moisture, such as the bathroom and kitchen.

Key features:

  • Design flexibility
  • Noise reduction
  • Cushions slips and falls
  • Helps to maintain temperature

Endurance by ScS

Here at ScS, we understand that purchasing flooring for your home is a major investment. That’s why we have developed our own range called ‘Endurance’, with many carpets and other furniture belonging to this range. The idea behind Endurance is that your carpets are stain-resistant, hard-wearing and much less prone to fading. This means that an Endurance carpet would be more appropriate and highly practical if it was laid in a home where there are pets and children. This is because both pets and children can have accidents or cause stains and with these carpets, removing such stains should not be a problem. In addition to stain resistance, you can also use bleach on any of our Endurance carpets in order to clean them.

Room suitability: Every room except where there is excessive moisture, such as the bathroom and kitchen.

Key Features:

  • Very easy to clean
  • Enhanced durability
  • Stain resistant
  • Can be cleaned with bleach
