The school holidays are here and parents all over the country and desperately searching for activities to keep their children busy.

When the sun’s shining, there’s nothing better than a cold, refreshing drink to cool you down, but why not turn it into a fun family activity and get your little ones making mocktails? Here are our favourite recipes:

The Mojito:

The mojito is a true classic that has stood the test of time, due to its fresh mint burst offering a refreshing feeling on a hot day. To make it, you’ll need fresh mint leaves, sugar syrup (or brown sugar), limes, soda water and apple juice (as a substitute for the rum). Once you’ve got these you’re good to go.

Method:

  1. Chop limes and add to glass
  2. Add sugar syrup or brown sugar and muddle with limes
  3. Clap your mint leaves to bring out the flavour and add to glass
  4. Add ice, top up with soda water and stir with a tea spoon

Strawberry Daiquiri

The strawberry daiquiri is one of the easiest mocktails to make. Fruit puree, syrup or real fruit will give your drink the strawberry punch you crave, and if you don’t have cocktail equipment to shake it, you can always use a sports flask.

Method:

  1. Chop limes and add to shaker / flask
  2. Add sugar syrup or brown sugar and muddle with limes
  3. Add strawberry puree and ice
  4. Give it a good shake and pour into your glass

Singapore Sling

Originally named the Tokyo Sling when it was concocted in 1915, the Singapore Slings is a fruity supreme that is just as refreshing without alcohol. All you’ll need is some cherry pop, ginger ale, lemon juice and grenadine!

Method:

  1. Add cherry pop, ginger ale and lemon juice to a glass and stir
  2. Add some crushed ice and top with grenadine
  3. Garish with a lemon slice

 

Sangria

A fruit based cocktail served in a jug – could there be a more summery drink?! With its colourful looks, this non alcoholic sangria is set to be a hit on a hot day.

Method:

  1. Quarter a plum and a peach, and remove the stones. Place fruit in a large pitcher.
  2. Remove peel from clementines, halve and place in pitcher. Remove greens from mixed berries, halve and place in pitcher.
  3. Cover with grape juice. Stir well and let sit in fridge at least 1 hour. Mix with ginger ale just before serving.

 

With shaking, stirring and muddling involved, these recipes will go down a treat with the kids – just make sure you keep the rum on the top shelf!
